What cloud gaming promised
The pitch was simple: no server admin, no configuration, no hardware worries. Game companies would run everything centrally, players would connect and play, and community servers would slowly fade away.
That has not happened. And it will not, at least not the way the pitch suggested.
Why community servers stay
Control. Cloud gaming gives players access to a game. A community server gives them an experience of their own. Setting rules, running mods, building a culture, banning cheaters, hosting events: a cloud platform cannot offer this by design.
Ping. Central servers are optimised for average ping across large regions. A dedicated server close to your players is optimised for them. In competitive matches, the difference between 25 ms and 60 ms is felt.
Community identity. A server has a name, a community and a history. "I play on [server name]" means something to regulars. Cloud lobbies are disposable.
Mods and custom content. The most loved game experiences were often made by communities: Zombie mod in CS 1.6, Minecraft modpacks, Garry's Mod gamemodes. Cloud gaming cannot support that much freedom.
What is actually changing
Games change faster than how they are hosted. New titles arrive, old ones fade, and hosting adapts. What does not change is the basic desire: players want places that feel like theirs, not lobbies they pass through.
The technical side keeps improving: better DDoS protection, faster activation, better network routes. Running a server is getting simpler and more accessible, so more people can have one.
Where AI fits in
Automated management (smart restarts, catching problems before players feel them, alerts) is already showing up at hosting companies. The admin work behind a server is shrinking. That makes community servers easier to run, not less relevant.
How we see it
We are not worried that cloud gaming will make dedicated servers useless. We focus on making hosting quick to start, reliable and priced so the decision is easy. The communities exist, the demand exists. Our job is to make sure the technical side never gets in your way.
