Why CS 1.6 needs a different kind of server
CS 1.6 runs on a single CPU core. Every tick, every hit registration and every player movement goes through the same thread. For CS 1.6, clock speed matters, not core count.
When you see an offer with "8 cores" for a CS 1.6 server, most of those cores will never be used. What matters is how fast that one core runs.
What to check before choosing a host
CPU frequency. Look for servers running at 4.0 GHz or more. The difference between a 3.2 GHz and a 5.0 GHz CPU is clearly noticeable in hit registration and smoothness when the server is full.
Server location. For players in Romania, a server in Western Europe with good routes to Romanian ISPs gives a stable ping. A steady 30 ms feels much better than 20 ms that jumps to 80 ms every evening.
Server FPS. A good CS 1.6 server runs at 500 to 1000 FPS (set with sys_ticrate). Some providers cap FPS on cheap plans so they can pack more customers on the same machine. Ask directly whether you can set the limit yourself.
Slot count. 16 slots are enough for a friends or match server. Public servers, Zombie servers or servers with many plugins need 32 slots and more resources.
DDoS protection. CS 1.6 servers get attacked often, especially popular ones. The protection should be built for game traffic and must not kick legitimate players while it filters an attack.
What to watch out for
Prices that look too good to be true usually come with oversold servers: many customers on the same physical resources. The server runs fine when it is quiet and starts to stutter exactly in the evening, when everyone is online.
Providers that do not say which CPU they use usually have a reason not to.
What a good server feels like
Low, stable ping. Constant server FPS. No rubber-banding when the server is full. Hits that register where you aimed. And a server that is up every time you join.
CS 1.6 at Wiptor
Our CS 1.6 servers run in Germany (Limburg) on AMD or Intel CPUs at 4.2 GHz, and the League plan at 5.0 GHz. DDoS protection is included on every server, and from the Wiptor panel you can see and control the protection yourself.
| Plan | Slots | RAM | Storage | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Match | 16 | 1 GB | 10 GB | €5/month |
| Competitive | 32 | 2 GB | 20 GB | €10/month |
| League | 32 | 4 GB | 20 GB | €15/month |
You get full file access over SFTP or the file manager, so you can upload any maps, mods or AMX Mod X plugins. The server is activated right after payment, and support answers in English and Romanian.
