Why the mod matters
In CS 1.6, the game mode defines your server. Two servers with the same maps can have completely different communities just because one is classic and the other is Zombie. The mod decides which players you attract, how often they return and how much admin work you have.
Almost all the mods below run on AMX Mod X. If you have not installed it yet, start with our AMX Mod X guide.
Zombie Plague (ZM)
One of the most popular CS 1.6 mods, especially in Eastern Europe. At the start of the round one or more players turn into zombies, and the humans must survive until the end. There are zombie classes, special weapons, points and bonuses.
Why people pick it: it is fun, rounds are short and casual players get it quickly.
What it needs from the server: more than a classic server. Lots of models, sounds and plugins mean more RAM and a fast CPU, especially at round start when the infection kicks in. We recommend at least 2 GB RAM and 32 slots.
Deathrun
One team runs through a map full of traps, while a single player, the "terrorist", triggers the traps. Whoever reaches the end can face them.
Why people pick it: creative maps and lots of fun with friends. It also works with fewer players.
What it needs from the server: little. Players have to download custom maps, so a fast download server (FastDL) helps a lot.
Jailbreak
Guards (CT) run the prison and prisoners (T) follow orders or try to escape. It has rules, special days and mini-games.
Why people pick it: it is social, with lots of roleplay and a very involved community.
What it needs from the server: technically, little. Admin-wise, a lot: rules must be applied fairly, otherwise every round ends in arguments.
CSDM (Deathmatch)
Instant respawn, weapons of your choice, no economy. Just aim and reflexes.
Why people pick it: it is the best mode for warming up and aim training. Players join for 15 minutes before matches.
What it needs from the server: a fast CPU, since shooting never stops.
Surf, Bhop and Kreedz (KZ)
Movement modes: you slide on ramps (Surf), keep jumping without losing speed (Bhop) or run timed jump routes (KZ). They have rankings and records.
Why people pick it: small but very loyal communities that come back for records.
What it needs from the server: stable server FPS. Any hiccup ruins the jumps.
GunGame
Every kill gives you the next weapon. The first to get a knife kill at the end wins.
Why people pick it: simple, fast and good for casual players.
Classic (Public or Competitive)
Not a mod, but still the most played option: classic maps, standard rules and a few useful plugins (stats, ranks, announcements).
Why people pick it: it attracts players who want "real" CS. It is also the easiest to maintain.
How to choose
- You want lots of casual players: Zombie Plague or GunGame.
- You want a small, loyal community: Jailbreak, Surf or KZ.
- You want a training server: CSDM.
- You want something easy to maintain: Classic.
One server, one mod. Servers that mix three mods to attract everyone usually end up attracting nobody.
