CS 1.6 server: does CPU or RAM matter more?

The short answer

For Counter-Strike 1.6, CPU frequency matters far more than RAM. A server with a fast CPU and modest RAM will always run better than one with lots of RAM and a slow CPU.

Here is why.

CS 1.6 uses a single core

CS 1.6 was written in the late 1990s, when CPUs had one core and games were built around that. The server runs almost entirely on one thread, so more cores do not help. What matters is how fast that one core runs, which comes down to clock speed in GHz.

A server at 5.0 GHz processes ticks, player movement and hit registration noticeably faster than one at 3.5 GHz, even if the slower one has twice the RAM.

How much RAM does a CS 1.6 server need?

Not much. A standard 32-player server runs comfortably on 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM. Even servers with many AMX plugins rarely go above 1.5 GB.

RAM only matters if you run several servers on the same machine or a very large plugin set. For a single server, it is rarely the bottleneck.

Classic vs Zombie: why ZM needs more

A classic competitive server loads standard maps, models and sounds. The server knows exactly what every player has and there is little custom content to handle.

A Zombie server is different. It loads custom zombie models, sounds, weapons and round rules, often with 10 to 20 plugins running at once. Every plugin adds CPU work. Custom models and sounds increase memory use. The round logic (zombie conversions, special classes, respawn timers) adds work every tick.

In practice, a ZM server needs roughly twice the RAM of a classic one and benefits a lot from a faster CPU. On a slow CPU you will see lag at the start of rounds, exactly when the zombie transformation kicks in.

CS 1.6 at Wiptor

Our CS 1.6 servers run on AMD and Intel CPUs at 4.2 to 5.0 GHz, chosen specifically because CS 1.6 uses a single core and clock speed is what counts.

For a friends or match server, the Match plan is enough (16 slots, 1 GB RAM, €5/month). For public or Zombie servers we recommend Competitive (32 slots, 2 GB, €10/month) or League (32 slots, 4 GB, 5.0 GHz CPU, €15/month).
