How to set up a competitive CS 1.6 server with AMX Mod X from scratch

What you need

A running CS 1.6 server with file access over SFTP or a file manager. That is it. The rest is uploads and settings.

Step 1: install Metamod

AMX Mod X runs on top of Metamod, which connects the game to the plugins. For CS 1.6 you use Metamod-P, or Metamod-R if the server runs ReHLDS.

Download the right version, extract it and upload the addons/metamod folder into the server's cstrike folder. Then open cstrike/liblist.gam and change the gamedll_linux line to point to Metamod, for example:

gamedll_linux "addons/metamod/dlls/metamod_i386.so"

Step 2: install AMX Mod X

Download the latest stable AMX Mod X from amxmodx.org, both the base package and the Counter-Strike package. Extract them and upload the addons/amxmodx folder into cstrike. This puts the modules, plugins and config files in place.

Add this line to cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.ini so Metamod loads AMX Mod X:

linux addons/amxmodx/dlls/amxmodx_mm_i386.so

Step 3: create your admin account

Open cstrike/addons/amxmodx/configs/users.ini and add a line like:

"STEAM_0:1:12345678" "" "abcdefghijklmnopqrstu" "ce"

The string of letters is the set of permissions. The most used ones:

• a: immunity (cannot be kicked or banned by other admins)
• c: kick
• d: ban and unban
• e: slay and slap
• f: change map
• l: rcon, meaning full access
• z: regular player, no admin rights

The last field, ce, means the admin is recognised by SteamID, without a password. On non-Steam servers you use a nickname and password instead.

Step 4: useful plugins for matches

.amxx files go into addons/amxmodx/plugins/, and you list their names in configs/plugins.ini.

A few that already ship with AMX Mod X and are useful on a competitive server:

• admin.amxx: the base admin plugin
• pausecfg.amxx: lets teams pause during a match
• statsx.amxx: end-of-round stats (needs the csstats module)

Step 5: server settings

Open cstrike/server.cfg and start from:

sv_maxrate 100000
sv_minrate 25000
sv_maxupdaterate 101
sv_minupdaterate 60
mp_friendlyfire 1
mp_tkpunish 1
sv_lan 0

The FPS of a dedicated CS 1.6 server is set in the startup parameters with +sys_ticrate 1000. If you cannot find where to change it, message us on live chat and we will set it for you.
