FreeBSD on a VPS: when it makes sense over Linux and who uses it

FreeBSD is not Linux

It sounds obvious but matters more than many think. FreeBSD is a complete operating system developed separately from Linux. The kernel, tools, package system and philosophy are different. What you know on one does not transfer directly to the other, even if the command line feels similar.

Most servers run Linux: Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux. FreeBSD has far fewer users, so a smaller community, fewer tutorials and a harder start. So why would anyone choose it?

Where FreeBSD has real advantages

Networking. FreeBSD's network stack has long been considered excellent for high traffic and low latency. Netflix delivers much of its video from FreeBSD servers, and Sony's PlayStation uses FreeBSD too. That is no coincidence: these are choices based on measurements.

ZFS. FreeBSD has full ZFS support right in the base system. ZFS is one of the most advanced filesystems: compression, snapshots, data integrity checks and redundancy. For databases, file hosting or backups, ZFS on FreeBSD is a powerful combination.

Security and isolation. FreeBSD jails have isolated processes and files for a long time, since before Linux containers. They are light, fast and have a long record of reliable isolation.

Stability. FreeBSD releases come at a slower, more careful pace than most Linux distributions. The base system changes little and predictably, which appeals to people who want a server that stays the same.

Who uses FreeBSD

Network engineers running high-traffic routers and firewalls. Storage admins who want ZFS. Security specialists who prefer FreeBSD's model. Developers targeting BSD platforms. Teams that chose it long ago and stayed.

If you are none of these, FreeBSD is probably not your best choice. Linux has more software, more tutorials and more support for an ordinary server.

FreeBSD on Wiptor VPS

On Wiptor VPS plans you can pick FreeBSD as the operating system at checkout, as easily as Ubuntu 24.04. It is not a workaround, it is an option for people who know they need it.

If you run networking software, build storage with ZFS or BSD-targeted applications, FreeBSD is ready for you. If you want to host a web app and are comfortable with Linux, Ubuntu will be easier.
