Why DarkRP is the hardest Garry's Mod gamemode to run

What makes DarkRP different

Most game servers have simple rules: kill the other team, survive, reach the objective. Rules are clear and violations are easy to spot.

DarkRP is a roleplay simulation with an economy. Players have jobs, money, property and relationships. There is no end to the game. Stories emerge from what players do within your rules.

That is why the rules are never simple. Every rule has exceptions. "No RDM" (random deathmatch) seems clear until someone argues they had a reason because of earlier events. "No prop blocking" seems clear until someone says their build serves roleplay. DarkRP admins spend more time interpreting rules than enforcing them.

The economy is the server

DarkRP lives on the player economy. Money comes from jobs, illegal activities and trade between players. If the economy breaks (runaway inflation, one job beating all others, money printer exploits), the server loses its point.

Balancing the economy is ongoing work. Salaries, material costs and property prices need adjusting based on how players actually behave, not how you expect them to. Most new DarkRP owners spend their first month tuning the economy.

The database is mandatory

DarkRP needs a MySQL database to keep player data: money, property, jobs, donator status. Without MySQL, player data can be lost on restart.

Creating the database, connecting it to DarkRP and backing it up regularly is work many beginners only discover when they hit it.

Addons

DarkRP is built on Garry's Mod Lua scripting. The server runs dozens of addons at once: jobs, weapons, property, admin tools, anti-cheat. They interact, and conflicts are common. A new addon that works perfectly on its own can unexpectedly break what you already had.

Addon compatibility needs constant attention. Every update, to the game or to an addon, can bring conflicts to resolve.

Why people do it anyway

When they work, DarkRP communities are among the most engaged in gaming. Players invest hours, build a name, form groups and create stories that keep them around for months. The complexity is the price of that engagement.

Servers that do well have things in common: a stable admin team, clear rules applied equally to everyone, regular economy reviews and the courage to make hard calls when players push limits.

Garry's Mod at Wiptor

A DarkRP server needs stability and fast storage for its database, because player data is read and written constantly. Our Garry's Mod servers come with NVMe storage, an included MySQL database and high-frequency CPUs.
