What the difference actually means
Both a managed and an unmanaged VPS give you a virtual server with its own resources: your slice of a physical machine, separated from other customers. The difference is what happens after the server starts.
Unmanaged means you get root access and handle everything yourself. The provider keeps the physical machine running and the network connected. Everything inside the server (the operating system, security updates, software, settings, backups) is your job.
Managed means the provider takes care of the system layer: updates, security patches, monitoring, troubleshooting and often backups. You handle your application, they handle the server underneath.
Who unmanaged suits
Unmanaged makes sense if you are comfortable with Linux. If you can set up a firewall, install and configure software, read logs and secure your server, you get full control at a lower price.
Developers with their own projects, sysadmins hosting clients and technically experienced users usually pick unmanaged. They do not pay for a service they do not need.
Who managed suits
Managed is the right choice when the server is a tool, not a project in itself. If you run a business, a game network or a web service and want to focus on what it does rather than how it runs, management takes the worry off you.
It is also the sensible choice if a security problem or a bad update would cost you a lot. With someone watching and updating your server, there are fewer surprises.
The honest trade-off
Management costs more. Unmanaged is cheaper but needs real technical knowledge. It is not about which is better in general, but which fits your situation.
If you are unsure, start with help. You can drop it any time once you are comfortable with the server. The other way round is more painful: finding out you needed help only after something broke.
