How much RAM does your Minecraft server actually need?

Why Minecraft is so RAM-hungry

Minecraft is one of the most memory-hungry games to host. Unlike CS 1.6, which runs lean, Minecraft keeps whole parts of the world (chunks) in RAM so players can explore without the server constantly reading from disk. The more players you have and the further they spread out, the more chunks have to stay loaded.

On top of that, every plugin and mod uses memory. Some are light. Others, especially economy plugins, multi-world tools and large modpacks, keep a lot of data in memory at all times.

How much RAM you need, in short

2 GB: a small private server with 5 to 10 friends on vanilla or Paper with a few plugins. You will hit the ceiling quickly if players spread out or you add more plugins.

4 to 6 GB: the sweet spot for most community servers. Up to 50 players on Paper or Spigot with a full plugin set (economy, permissions, anti-grief, chat) run comfortably here. It is also enough for light modpacks of 30 to 50 Forge or Fabric mods.

8 GB: busy servers with 50 to 100 players, or serious modpacks. Big packs like All The Mods, SkyFactory or RLCraft need at least 6 to 8 GB to avoid constant freezes.

10 GB and more: large networks with several worlds, 100+ concurrent players or modpacks with over 150 mods. BungeeCord or Velocity networks linking several servers also belong here.

More RAM does not automatically mean a faster server

A common mistake is buying the biggest plan and expecting magic. RAM lets Minecraft keep more in memory, but if the CPU is slow or the disk is old, the server will still lag. NVMe storage matters a lot for chunk loading: the difference between NVMe and a classic hard drive is felt immediately when players explore new areas.

One more tip: do not give the server more RAM than it needs. Java cleans up memory periodically, and a huge, badly tuned heap can cause longer pauses.

Minecraft at Wiptor

Every Wiptor Minecraft server runs on NVMe storage, not classic drives, and supports both Java and Bedrock. You can run Paper, Spigot, Forge, Fabric or BungeeCord with one-click installs.
