Ping or FPS: which one matters more in your game?

They affect different things

FPS is how many frames per second your computer draws. Ping is how long a packet takes to travel from you to the server and back. They are completely separate: fixing one leaves the other unchanged.

High FPS means a smoother picture on your screen. Low ping means what you do and what the server sees are closely in sync. Both matter, but in different ways and at different thresholds.

When FPS matters more

In fast games, high FPS shows you more frames between the server's updates. If the server sends positions 64 times per second and you run at 300 FPS, you see smoothed movement between updates, so you aim more precisely.

Below roughly 60 FPS the picture becomes visibly choppy. Between 60 and 144 FPS most players feel a clear improvement. Above 144 FPS the gains shrink and depend on your monitor's refresh rate. In Source engine games, somewhere around 300 to 400 FPS extra frames stop bringing anything practical.

FPS is entirely on your side: your PC hardware, graphics settings and the game engine. The server cannot give you FPS.

When ping matters more

Ping is the delay between what you do and when the server registers it. At 20 ms your shot reaches the server after 20 ms. At 100 ms the same shot arrives after 100 ms.

In competitive shooters this delay is critical. Hit registration, peeker's advantage and grenade timing all depend on low ping. No amount of FPS makes up for 80 ms of delay.

Below about 30 ms most players cannot feel the difference in casual play. Between 30 and 80 ms the difference shows in competitive matches. Above 80 ms you are at a constant disadvantage in any real-time game.

Ping depends on your connection and on where the server is. That is where your choice of host matters.

The realistic order

For most players, ping under 40 ms matters more than extra FPS above 144. A player with 144 FPS and 15 ms ping will play better competitively than one with 300 FPS and 70 ms ping.

Fix ping first if it is above 50 ms. Then work on FPS if it is below 144.

How we do it at Wiptor

Server location is the biggest factor in your players' ping. Our servers are in Germany (Limburg) and France (Gravelines), which gives low ping across most of Europe. From Romania, ping to Germany is usually around 30 to 35 ms, stable and without evening spikes.

We do not control your players' PCs or internet, but we make sure the path from our servers to them is as short as possible. You can measure your real ping to our locations right now, straight from your browser.
