Rust server rates (2x, 5x, 10x) and which plugins to install

Vanilla or modded?

The first thing to decide is whether the server stays vanilla (just like the official servers) or becomes modded (higher rates, plugins, kits).

The in-game server browser separates them clearly. Servers that change rates or gameplay show up under "Modded". Vanilla servers with only admin plugins can stay under "Community".

Vanilla attracts players who want the full experience: long grind, hard progress, every raid matters. Modded attracts players with less time who want to get to the PvP and raiding quickly.

What the rates mean

The gather rate multiplies the resources you get. At 2x, a tree that gives 100 wood gives 200.

  • 1x (vanilla): for players with plenty of time. A wipe feels long and every base is a big investment.
  • 2x: the most popular choice for communities that want a game that still feels "real" but less tiring. Many players with jobs and school prefer 2x.
  • 3x to 5x: fast pace. Big bases appear on day one and raids start early. Works well with weekly wipes.
  • 10x and above: almost no grind. Everything revolves around PvP and raids. Attracts players who want non-stop action but get bored quickly.

The simple rule: the higher the rates, the more often you need to wipe, otherwise the server "runs out" in a few days.

Oxide and Carbon: how to run plugins

Rust plugins run on a modding framework. The two used today:

  • Oxide (uMod): the standard for years, with the most ready-made plugins on umod.org.
  • Carbon: newer, compatible with most Oxide plugins, focused on performance.

After installing, plugins (.cs files) go into the oxide/plugins folder and the server loads them by itself, without a restart. Each plugin's settings appear in oxide/config.

Plugins worth having on almost any modded server

  • Gather Manager: set gather rates per resource.
  • Stack Size Controller: increase how much fits in an inventory slot, so you do not carry 20 stacks of stone.
  • Kits: gear packs at start or for VIPs.
  • NTeleportation: teleport home and to friends, with limits and cooldowns.
  • Remover Tool: remove pieces from your own base without destroying them.
  • Better Chat: chat groups and colours (admin, VIP, player).
  • Clans: clans with tags and friendly fire off between members.

For administration, on any server, even vanilla:

  • Admin Radar or similar tools, to quickly see what is happening on the map;
  • a player report plugin, so you get reports straight in game.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Too many plugins at once. Every plugin uses resources and can conflict with others. Install only what you use.
  • Paid perks that break the game. VIP kits with strong weapons drive away players who do not pay. Stick to cosmetic or convenience perks.
  • Changing rates mid-wipe. Players plan around the rates. Change them only at wipe.

Rust at Wiptor

Rust is one of the heaviest games to host, and plugins add load. For a modded server with many plugins we recommend at least Standard (8 GB RAM). You get full file access, so you install Oxide or Carbon and any plugin you like, and DDoS protection is included.
