Distance is not the only factor
Most players assume the closest server automatically means the lowest ping. Physical distance matters, but it is only part of the story. Network routes, agreements between providers and the quality of a host's connections can make a server in another city perform better than one that is closer on the map.
How your data travels
When a packet leaves your machine, it passes through several routers: your ISP's network, transit providers, the host's network, and finally the server. Every hop adds delay. A server in Germany may have fewer hops to Bucharest than one in a neighbouring country, even if that one is closer on the map.
Stability matters too. A ping that stays at 30 ms all day is much better than 15 ms that jumps to 90 ms in the evening, when networks are busy.
What to look for in a host
- The exact location: not "Europe", but the country and city. Ask for both.
- The host's connections: a host with several network providers and direct routes to ISPs in your region gives a more stable ping.
- A real ping test: test before you buy. A serious host shows you your real ping to its servers.
Wiptor locations
Wiptor servers are in Germany (Limburg) and France (Gravelines), in Western European data centers with good connections to the rest of the continent. From Romania, ping to Germany is usually around 30 to 35 ms and stays stable in the evening.
Practical advice
Before deciding, test from your players' real locations, not only from yours. Tools like ping, traceroute or mtr show the path between your players and the server. On our network page you can also measure your ping to every Wiptor location straight from the browser.
