How to know when it is time to upgrade your game server

The signs that matter

Not all lag is a hardware problem. Some comes from settings, some from a plugin. Upgrading without finding the cause costs money and leaves the problem in place.

Here is how to find out what you are dealing with.

Sign 1: the CPU sits above 80%

Check CPU usage at peak hours. If it stays above 80% when the server is full or nearly full, you have outgrown your plan.

For Minecraft (Paper): type /tps in the console. If TPS keeps dropping below 18 at peak hours, even with optimised settings, the CPU is most likely the bottleneck.

For CS 1.6: check the server's real FPS in the console with stats. If you set 1000 FPS but it drops well below 500 when the server is full, the CPU cannot keep up.

Sign 2: RAM usage above 85%

When RAM fills up, the server starts using disk as backup memory, which is far slower. Check memory in the panel. If it stays above 85% with players online, add RAM before it gets worse.

Minecraft is the usual suspect. A heavily modded server or a widely explored world eats RAM continuously.

Sign 3: lag on loading and saving

It shows as lag when new areas load in Minecraft, or as periodic freezes when the server saves the world. NVMe storage fixes this in most cases. If you are on a plan with a classic SSD or hard drive, faster storage sometimes fixes what looks like a CPU or RAM problem.

Sign 4: lag grows with player count

If everything is fine with 10 players but lag starts at 30, the plan suited a smaller server and you have grown. This is the clearest sign it is time to upgrade.

Sign 5: lag has nothing to do with player count

If the server lags with 5 players or at random, the problem is almost certainly settings or a misbehaving plugin, not hardware. Upgrading will not fix it. Find the guilty plugin first.

Before upgrading, check three things

Restart the server and watch it from scratch: some memory problems build up over time. Update all plugins: outdated ones can cause big performance problems. In Minecraft, check view-distance and simulation-distance: they affect performance more than almost any other setting.

Upgrading at Wiptor

At Wiptor you upgrade straight from your account: pick the bigger plan, pay the difference, and the server gets its new resources after a short restart. No data loss, no moving. We built it this way on purpose, because servers grow and growth should never be an obstacle.
